Day Four - Rough Sea

14.09.10, 09:41 by Barbara Hentzsch (comments: 4)

A typical member of the "fish group".

The day started like yesterday, with rain, wind and clouds. The “fish-group” (we) had to get up at 7 a.m. to catch the fishing boat. We started our trip at 8.30 with the fishermen/biologists and headed out to sea. Our task for today was to catch as many fish as possible. The rest of the crew stayed in the harbor of Gager because of the bad weather. On the ship they continued to investigate their samples. Which sounded less entertaining than our task in our opinion, but in the end it turned out that it was good for them to have the extra time for analyses.

While the rest of the crew was investigating, the fish-group was out on the rough sea. The wind was up to strengths of 10 m/s and the waves were breaking in to the boat. On our way to the first net it was pouring, but that didn’t stop us from seeing a seal and keeping up our good spirit. The first catch didn’t bring us any fish, which was demotivating. The gill-net (the second net) was more successful e.g. with catches of Perch, Pike-Perch and Ruffe.

After more than one hour driving through the rain, we finally arrived at the last fish traps.  In those fish traps we found 5 eels, a lot of flounder in different sizes and more jellyfish than the jellyfish-group could ever dream of. We were so exhausted that we fell asleep of the way home despite the weather.

In the harbor a lot of work was waiting for us, which included to measure and weigh the fish. We are writing this blog as we’re waiting for the fish to cook. Tonight’s menu says fish soup and chocolate pudding, yummy!

XOXOXO Ben, Orio, Kerstin & the rest of the crew.

Hi fish group, and the other groups),
seems you had a quite good day on the water. And finally, you were rather successfull while catching some fish. I would like to see some more pictures of your adventures. Have you eaten your own fish?
best regards
Daniel

Hi again,
I have not seen the last paragraph of your todays blog. So the question regarding eating your own fish is redundant. But was it tasty?

You lucky students were on the water during these fantastic and windy days. I have to wait for the weekend for going sailing or kiting (but wind forecast is not optimal for both).

Have some fun during the next days.

Daniel

Hello,
Yes, we ate the fish we caught in a delicious fishsoup with some nice pudding for desert. Though the small ones like the one Kerstin (Sweden) is eating on the picture, we gave to the seaguls. Yesterday we got some more fish from the fishing boat and we had quite a job weihging and measuring all the fish. The other groups also got some more samples and right now we're working on analysing and drawing conclusions. Keep up with our blog!
Best regards, the team on LOVIS
