Day Five - Sun, samples and big waves!

Look me in the eye: the ROV

A new morning in Gager started with rain again. After breakfast we listened to Sven who had prepared an presentation about the Baltic Sea to depress our knowledge about it. Moreover, this morning some engineers visited us on the ship, to show us the work with the ROV, which is a robot with a camera on it, to give us overview about the world under the water surface. We could follow it’s view with the help of a special screen and were really impressed, although we couldn’t see that much because of sediments and algae which were swirled up by the rough sea. The rough sea was also the reason why we had to settle this experiment in the harbor.

After finished the work with the ROV, we adapted ourselves and the boat (the sails) to the weather for leaving the harbor of Gager, while one group was preparing our sandwiches for lunch. Just a short time later we had a meeting in our groups again, to talk about what we are going to do this day with our samples.

Afterwards, while waiting for the moment to take more samples, everybody was doing something different: playing the fluit or the guitar, enjoying the sea and the sun, which suddenly appeared in the sky and drove away the rainclouds, taking some pictures, having a shower in the sea spray, playing cards, eating chocolate or fighting with the sea sickness. Finally, we were able to continue the sampling, excepted of the fishing group, who couldn’t go outside with the fishing boat because of the weather.

All in all the sampling worked more or less better than last time and in between we could also see the famous chalk cliffs. So, while we were dirty of sediment and jellyfish, another group started to prepare the dinner: noodles with vegetable sauce and apple-carrot salad.
Everyone was enjoying the meal, when we entered Sassnitz harbor and we finished the day with taking some walk, working on our topics or just sitting together to talk and to watch the taken pictures of the day.

That’s all for this day,
Ieva and Julia
