Handling some challenges

10.04.13, 10:00 (comments: 0)

Finally we have moved our ICP instruments to the new laboratories. Yesterday we tried out electrical connections, gas and water cooling that is necessary to operate the instruments. Unfortunately we found out that we need a 32 Amp instead of 16 Amp electrical powers for one of the instruments. This was unclear at the planning stage and the 32 amp is only necessary during start-up which takes some few seconds, but still needed. The last month samples for analysis have piled up and we now have a small mountain of boxes and bags with samples waiting processing. This is all due to the moving of the instruments where we have not been able to operate them. Meanwhile I have spent time doing some writing on manuscripts dealing with the analysis of uranium isotopes at very low concentrations. The main interest in this work is to reduce the contribution of the background from handling in the laboratory, to improve the repeatability and reduce the contribution of cluster ions in the instrument. A rather technical manuscript but which addresses the possibility to analyse uranium in samples like marine sediments and pore water avoiding traps and improving precision.
