Follow aquatic microbial ecologist/biogeochemist Emma Kritzberg in her everyday life as a researcher. Emma's work revolves around the export of dissolved organic material from the terrestrial biosphere into the aquatic system and how it is overturned and affecting the aquatic life. The dissolved organic matter is what colors the water in many small forest lakes and bogs brown. The water color has a strong effect on the aquatic life as it determines the light conditions for plants and visually oriented predators. The dissolved organic matter is also a resource to aquatic bacteria that can provide a basis for the food web. During the last decades water color has been increasing strongly in lakes, rivers and coastal waters. Emma's research is centered around the causes and consequences of this trend.
