Day 3 - Rainy fieldwork

Tja!

Tja!

When we woke up today, it was raining heavily. We wasn’t very excited about that because we were going to Swinoujscie. After breakfast we were divided into two groups and went by bus into the city. The first group was dropped off by the harbor while the second group went to a beach located east of the city.

At the harbor we boarded a boat and sailed out to sea. There we took some samples of the plankton and the sediments of the ocean floor. All of us thought it was really exciting but WET because it was still pouring down. Among some of the more exciting things we saw were a medusa jellyfish, caught by accident in the plankton net. On the way home one of the students (Paul from Lithuania) got the chance to steer the boat. At first it was a little bit scary, but it turns out he’s a really good sailor! (Captain Jack Paul!)

At the beach we looked at the dune heights. The professor told us that the plants on the beach were really important because they helped prevent erosion. We took some samples of the sand in different places. And because many jellyfish has died this season on the beach, Emma and Linnea buried a very special jellyfish. (R.I.P!) This was an interesting experience, but due to the bad weather it seemed like it took forever because we were so cold and wet. We still haven’t quite dried out books and cloths yet, but we try to stay positive.

At the evening we went by bus to a cozy cabin (with a fireplace!) and had a lovely three-course meal and later on we played games, were Gregor (from Germany) died from ketchup poisoning!

Hi there,
Fun to read your blog! (Who wrote it?)
Poor folks, got all sopping wet. I hope the weather is cooperating better now - or else you must see to it that you eat up all the food at every meal to encourage Petrus!
Poor Gregor - did he need reanimation??? Make sure the song doesn't become true: Ten little Indians...., nine little Indians ... - I want to see you all again in Sopot!
Have a great time together,
Lena
