'Spitsbergen is extremely beautiful. It combines the three great elements: mountains, sea and ice. The area of Hornsund belongs to the most spectacular. It changes its face with weather and season changes'  (Stanislaw Siedlecki, 'Home by the Pole').

'Home by the Pole' is the title of the book of prof. Stanisław Siedlecki – Polish geolog – the founder of the Polish Station at Hornsund. He was decsibed the first winter stay at Horsnund in years 1957/58. He showed that it is possibile to built something from nothing / form the base, you need only faith and patient. There will be no Polish Station at Horsnund without him.
