Today the rest of the Arctic expedition team is expected to joint us by the plane to Tromso via Oslo. The 2nd stage of the cruise will be started. Thank you Przemek for writing the news from the ship and enjoy your research as scientific crew member!
The new Head of the expedition will be Assoc Prof. Waldemar Walczowski, who is the Head of the Ocean Circulation Laboratory – part of the Physical Oceanography Department at IO PAN. Two young scientists from this Laboratory: Ilona Goszczko and Agnieszka Prominska are to be engaged in our blog.
Let’s hope the connection with the vessel so far awal in the North will be in order.
We (an additional part of the scientific crew) got to the Oceania on 19 of June and that day we moved to the North, full of humor and hope for successful measurements. After supper the cruise meeting had place in order to assign the watch schedule and scientific duties of every crew member. The whole group was divided into three watches - 4 hours of work in a day 4 in a night time. However who cares about days and nights - we already have a midnight sun... Later we also had a short safety training and test alarm on the deck in case of the quick evacuation. And finally we sailed to the sea through the long fjord with beautiful mountains around, with tops still covered by snow. Good bye darkness, trees and strawberries - there is a time for a polar adventures.
We took 12 000 ltr of fuel and 25 metric tons of water. 'Oceania' left Tromso at 23:25 direction West Spitsbergen Island.
Tomorow at 9 am the stay at the 1st sampling station.
