The EMB focuses predominantly on techniques and technology development in the fields of biological water quality monitoring, cellular technology, aquatic biotechnology and cell-based medical techniques.The core competencies of the institute lie in the handling of cellular in vitro systems as well as molecular biological, protein chemical, cellular and marine biological research methods.

Die Fraunhofer-Einrichtung für marine Biotechnologie konzentriert sich vornehmlich auf Technologie- und Technikentwicklung in den Bereichen biologische Wasserqualitätsprüfung, Zelltechnologie, aquatische Biotechnologie und zellbasierte Medizintechnik. Die Kernkompetenzen der Einrichtung liegen in der Handhabung zellulärer In-vitro-Systeme, sowie in molekularbiologischen, proteinbiochemischen, zellulären und meeresbiologischen Untersuchungsmethoden.
