Bus trip around the Curonian Spit
23.08.12, 22:09 by Marija Kataržytė (comments: 1)
Guten Tag,
this is Germany writing again.
The day
started with an interesting lecture about a „Simulation model
of
the
Baltic Sea
ecosystem“ presented by the german scientist Anja Eggert from
the
Institute of
Baltic Sea
Research (IOW) in Warnemünde.

Listening to the presentation
Afterwards we went around the Curonian Spit by bus to get an impression of the most important sights and landscapes of the region.
First we stopped at the „mountain of witches“. There we could see lots of filigree sculptures made of wood. They show different characters of fairytales, gods and other spiritual creatures.

Afterwards we visited the cormorant colony and the main problems those birds cause concerning to the ecosystem were explained to us.

Dead trees with comorant nests (caused by bird droppings)
Then we climbed the dead dunes, which are really huge and beautiful. There we took a nice group picture.

Our last stop was the town Nida, where we visited an amber museum. They showed us the different types, colours and told us some more interesting facts about amber.

Then we had some freetime for ourselves.
Back at
the
hotel
we
made
a little group contest about the lectures we had yesterday. At the end of the day we worked intensively on our research projects again to be able to present our results soon.
Goodbye and „tschüss“ for now! (:
