This is the German Science group and now we are going to tell you about our first day in the South Baltic WebLab Summer Science Camp 2012 in Smiltyne/Klaipeda.
Yesterday we arrived here in Klaipeda after a long and exhausting journey and were welcomed with open arms by our nice hosts. We are one of the 5 student groups from Lithuania, Poland, Denmark, Sweden and Germany.
Each group consists of 5 students who are supervised by teachers and scientists.

Today was a kind of introductory day. We started it with different presentations about general topics, like how to choose a research task and develop a presentation and we got an overview about the marine institute of Klaipeda.
Afterwards we collected our knowledge about the problems concerning the Baltic Sea and each country had to prepare a poster and a short presentation.

In the freetime:
After Lunch we were divided into 5 different research groups, according to our interests.
The groups will work in the Curonian Lagoon on following topics:
- Hydrography
- Phytoplankton
- Cyanobacteria
- Meiobenthos
- Macrophytes
Then we were introduced to the different sampling methods by our
scientists. They showed us the equipment and explained how it works.

We are looking forward to our trip on the Curonian Lagoon tomorrow, where we are going to sample different material.

Hi there, well now I'm so happy to hear that all of you've arrived safely in Smiltyne. Sounds like you've already been quite creative in generating your own ideas of what the Baltic Sea offers in terms of meaningful research. Enjoy your time together and keep sharing your experiences with us poor fellows who have to stay at home, right?Greetings from Hiddensee (one of Germany's most beautiful islands - without any cars!) where I've been having endless swims in the Baltic Sea. Hope you feel inclined to go swimming a lot, too! Lena

I like your poster! Alles gutes-if I still remember German language but most probably not....
