The second module presented today was the fourth in our WebLab: "Ecosystem of the lagoons". Like the third module it is still in the first stage of development. Marija showed us the plans and ideas and how they might be implemented.
The lagoons of the South Baltic Sea are fascinating environments. Fjords, open bays, lagoons and river estuaries - their characteristics offer plenty of possibilities for research. They are highly dynamic areas, being subjected to all kinds of coastal influences - erosion, accumulation, flooding.
Shallow lagoons and river estuaries are the favoured nurseries for fish and birds, the stopover of migratory birds. Organisms living in those lagoons need to be adepted to high osmotic stress, caused by the ever changing salinity.
Lagoons are influenced by human activities like harbor dredging and bioinvasions caused by shipping. How do those measures affect the habitat?
There are many questions to be answered in this learning module...
