The last few days were filled with routine work around the clock. We are right now near Cape Blanc running a section from the 700m depth contour towards the deeper part of the ocean, with depth of more than 4000 m. CTD rosette, particle camera, in-situ pumps were regularly deployed at selected stations to obtain sample for analyses for a huge number of different parameters back in the home laboratories. At two of those stations we have additionally recovered and deployed long chains of instruments, our moorings. Both of them were one year in the ocean, and will stay for another year. Until now our work along the section is going without any problems. The weather improved dramatically and is really great right now, sunny, bright days and calm sea make our work slightly easier, and we enjoy the weather very much. In the evening hours we meet often on the after deck, to enjoy the sunset, spend few relaxing hours together, and have a bath in the pool. And sometimes during the day we are very lucky and spot whales or other animals. We have seen few whales until now, sometimes very near, sometimes just to be recognised by the water fountain in the air, but every time we are all quite exited to see those great animals in their original environment. It is just fantastic! One day a swallow stopped on the ship, we tried to feed it and supplied some fresh water. Unfortunately the bird was too weak to survive. Often, when the sea is very calm we can also observe some jelly fishes drifting along. This species has a sail, and uses it to move with the wind. It is called Portuguese Man o' War, and it is quite dangerous while touched.
